Paul Gilbarg was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 6, 1940 to Joseph and Gertrude Gilbarg.
After graduating from high school Paul attended Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (NYU) and completed his B.S. degree in Mathematics. He went on to the University of Minnesota where he was a Ph.D. candidate in Economics. In 1999 he received an M.S. Degree in Engineering Management from Portland State University.
While at the University of Minnesota he met Faye Wickre. Paul and Faye were married on June 26, 1971 and moved to Oregon that August when Paul accepted...

Paul Gilbarg was born in Brooklyn, New York on May 6, 1940 to Joseph and Gertrude Gilbarg.
After graduating from high school Paul attended Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (NYU) and completed his B.S. degree in Mathematics. He went on to the University of Minnesota where he was a Ph.D. candidate in Economics. In 1999 he received an M.S. Degree in Engineering Management from Portland State University.
While at the University of Minnesota he met Faye Wickre. Paul and Faye were married on June 26, 1971 and moved to Oregon that August when Paul accepted an Assistant Professor of Economics position with Lewis and Clark College.
A "few years" in Oregon turned into 45 years. He was an Adjunct Professor at Linfield College Portland campus (1978-2014), Marylhurst University (1980-Present), Eastern Oregon University Portland campus (2000-2008), DeVry University/Keller Graduate School (2006-2013), and Oregon Institute of Technology (2010-Present).
Paul was passionate about teaching and helping students, doing everything he could to help students understand. He taught at the University level for 50 years and couldn't go anywhere without crossing paths with a student, even in Italy.
He taught courses in Economics, Statistics, Experimental Design, Research Methods, Strategic Planning, Project Management and Operations Management, In addition to teaching he held a variety of positions at Tektronix for 10 years and Instromedix for four years.
On November 20, 2016, Paul passed away in Portland with Faye by his side. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Faye Gilbarg; niece, Erica Gendler; great-nephew Jacob Gendler; sister-in-law, Marilyn Gilbarg; cousins Dan Gilbarg (Marlene); and Seth Finkelstein; Faye's sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, as well as an untold number of students and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Stephen.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 4, 2016 in St. Anne's Chapel at Marylhurst University. Contributions may be made in his memory to Providence Foundation Cancer Center Research in Immunotherapy, Habitat for Humanity, or Oregon Food Bank.
